OpenAI launches ChatGPT bug bounty program offering up to $20,000 rewards

OpenAI has launched a bug bounty program offering people as much as $20,000 to help the company find bugs in systems. The move is aimed at strengthening the security of company’s artificial intelligence (AI) systems, such as the massively popular ChatGPT chatbot.

Rewards: The rewards range from $200 for low-severity findings to up to $20,000 for exceptional discoveries.

OpenAI has partnered with the crowdsourcing cybersecurity platform Bugcrowd to manage the submission and reward process.

Hundreds have already signed up for the program with hopes of getting on the “hall of fame” list for those who successfully identify bugs. At least 29 vulnerabilities have already been identified by April 14, with the average payout at $694.7, according to Bugcrowd.

Bug Bounty Program: The AI company wrote in a blog post that it has rolled out a bug bounty program through which people can report weaknesses, bugs, or security flaws they find while using its AI products.

“We are inviting the global community of security researchers, ethical hackers, and technology enthusiasts to help us identify and address vulnerabilities in our systems,” the company said. “By sharing your findings, you will play a crucial role in making our technology safer for everyone,” it said.

OpenAI’s bug bounty program is not the first of its kind. Many companies offer such incentives to discover glitches in their systems.

OpenAI, which was founded in 2015, released ChatGPT in November 2022. The  AI-powered chatbot reached 100 million monthly in just two months after launch, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history. Additionally, Microsoft promised to invest $10 billion into the company and also integrated ChatGPT into its Bing search engine.
