Twitter’s new boss Elon Musk has announced the return of manual verification to resolve impersonation issues, calling the process “painful but necessary”.

The social media platform has also rolled out colored check marks — gold for companies, grey for the government, and the original blue for individual accounts.

“Gold check for companies, grey check for government, blue for individuals (celebrity or not) and all verified accounts will be manually authenticated before check activates,” Musk tweeted. The Twitter CEO says he’ll explain the details of new updates later next week.

The move comes after Twitter put its recently announced $8 blue tick subscription service on hold following a wave of parody accounts impersonating former presidents, celebrities and organizations.

The blue check mark was previously reserved for the verified accounts of famous personalities, politicians, journalists and other professionals. However, the $8 subscription fee opened the blue check mark for everyone.

Elon Musk recently announced “amnesty” for previously banned accounts, provided they had “not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam.” He tweeted his decision after 72.4% of over 3.1 million voters backed the amnesty in an online poll. However, experts have warned the move would prompt “superspreaders of hate” to return to the social media platform which may lead to a rise in hate speech and misinformation.
